Winter Rant

… now that Twitter is dead.

Winter Rant is now part of the Fediverse

This is going to be exciting. Turns out that any WP blog/site can be turned into an ActivityPub server with a setting under the site’s Discussion Settings.

This is exciting because this blog’s profile can show up on Fediverse social networks such as Mastodon (and soon Threads). Specifically, you can follow Winter Rant at this handle: @rant.vpalepu.com on any social network that implements the ActivityPub protocol.

Here is the Winter Rant profile, as seen from my @krishnavp@mastodon.online profile (and yes, that is me following it).

Technically, this post is a test to see if this shows up on my mastodon.online feed 🤩 I am over the moon about this. If this test works, I will never have to explicitly share my blog posts on social media networks – because it will just show up on its own social media feed! I will still likely repost content from this blog’s feed, but never as an original post. How cool and seamless is that!

Yes, however note that setting is only on wordpress.com blogs. For self-hosted WordPress sites, use the ActivityPub plugin. Same basic code, just not built in.

        1. @otto42 Great callout! Thank you!

Do you also know if comments on WordPress federate?
Right now when I post replies in the WP blog’s comment section directly, I don’t see them show up in Mastodon. (But my replies here on Mastodon certainly show up as comments on WP.)
          Is that expected?
Might it have something to do with mastodon.online specifically?

I don't have any details about which way this works back and forth, but you could always ask in the support forums. I'm pretty sure that's a work in progress.

I believe that it's Mastodon works into WordPress and then replies to those specifically work back into Mastodon? But I can't be sure.

This is like visiting a new planet (server) early on, and finding out that it's going to be awesome. 👽

The fact that you were able to open up the blog that you've kept for some time to the Fediverse is amazing! 🐘

    Hello
I am reading your WordPress Post on Mastodon.
This comment should show up in your comments section. Unfortunately, you can't reply to me via WordPress, but that feature is coming soon.

Yep. I had a chat with the WordPress Developer who is doing this work, and this was something they are fixing. I think it also ties in with old WordPress Posts being visible, too.
Lots of exciting new developments coming.

        1. @MrLee @rant.vpalepu.com that sounds like wonderful news! Looking forward to it!
In fact, if you are able to point me to the WordPress developer/community working on this, that would be great! I would love to learn and experiment more in this space! 🙂
